Rockenfeller takes first DTM victory

Mike Rockenfeller took his maiden DTM victory with a fabulous drive in the second round of the championship at Zandvoort. The Abt Audi driver took advantage of a slow getaway by Jamie Green to move into second by the time the pack reached the first corner, and vaulted ahead of early leader Bruno Spengler at the opening round of pitstops. With a number of different strategies being employed by various teams, it was not until lap 30 when Rockenfeller was handed the lead, but by that stage he had established a 2.5-second lead over Spengler and the Canadian's HWA Mercedes team-mate Green.

Brundle takes his first pole in F2

Alex Brundle claimed his first Formula 2 pole position after coming out on top of a tense session at Magny-Cours. Rain before the start of the session left the track wet and the early times around 30 seconds away from the pace set in practice.

How GM avoided its own disaster after Japanese quake

GM Ren Cen

While Toyota has been one of the automakers hardest hit by the tragic Japanese earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters in March of this year, nearly every auto company on the planet felt its impact. Thanks to a global, tight-laced network of interconnected suppliers, manufacturers were left scrambling to make up gaps in the parts chain when Japan's manufacturing mechanism ground to a halt. As it turns out, General Motors took on the challenge of making sure as many of its plants stayed operational as possible by employing a team of hundreds of employees that worked around the clock.

Officially termed "Project J," the workers came up with creative solutions to manage the supply interruptions. As a result, GM says that its bottom line for 2011 won't be significantly impacted by the Japanese earthquake.

In some cases, that meant shifting parts from low-volume plants like the Shreveport, Louisiana facility responsible for the Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Canyon to other facilities. GM stressed that it didn't want to simply walk away from its old suppliers in their darkest days, so the automaker sent a team to Japan to learn how it could help get key factories back up and running. That included sourcing hydrogen peroxide and steel from Korea from two different companies.

The whole effort is incredibly impressive and worth a read if you've got the time. Check it out over at The New York Times.

Korjus wins race 1 at Monza

Tech 1 Racing's Kevin Korjus won his second Formula Renault 3.5 race of the season in a manic encounter at Monza. After an aggressive start in which he passed front-row man Robert Wickens around the outside of the first chicane, Korjus took advantage of a small mistake from pole-sitter Cesar Ramos to take the lead on lap five. Pressure from Carlin's Robert Wickens led to Korjus out-braking himself and taking to the escape road at Turn 1 on lap 18

New Volvo and SEAT engines delayed

World Touring Car Championship SEAT team SUNRED and Volvo squad Polestar Racing have both opted to delay introducing their new 1.6 litre turbos after testing the units last week. The teams had been hoping to have the new-generation units, which are claimed to provide as much as 40 extra horsepower, ready to deploy for this weekend's round at Monza. But after the latest bench tests of the SEAT engine and a track test of its Volvo counterpart, both teams have decided to remain with their current two-litre engines
